America250 Art, Essay, and Photojournalism Contest

Calling all creatives! Winters Heritage House Museum, as an America250PA Nonprofit Affiliate, announces an art, essay, and photojournalism contest to celebrate the Semiquincentennial. Registration and contest submission opens Friday, February 20. The deadline to enter is Friday, March 6. All entrants will be entered into a drawing to win prizes, and will be invited to the opening night preview and reception.


America’s 250th Contest: Writing & Art Prompts 

Choose one prompt within your age group to inspire an essay or artwork, unless otherwise noted on the description 

Preschool (Ages 3–5) Any of these can be written or art of any kind 

  • What I Love About America 
  • My Favorite Place in My Town 
  • Red, White, and Blue 

 

Early Elementary (Grades K–2 / Ages 5-9) 

  • America is Special to Me Because… 
  • My Favorite Place in Town 
  • A Hero in My Community - Someone You Know Who Makes Your Town Better 

 

Late Elementary (Grades 3–5 / Ages 9-11) 

  • A Moment in American History I’d Like to Visit 
  • What Freedom Means to Me 
  • Write a Letter to America on Its 250th Birthday 

 

Middle School (Grades 6–8 / Ages 11-13) 

  • What I Hope America Will Be Like in the Next 250 Years 
  • Voices of America: A Story from My Family or Community 
  • Art That Tells an American Story - Posters, Illustrations, Collages 

 

High School (Grades 9–12 / Ages 13-18) 

  • Voices That Shaped America - Writers, Artists, Inventors, or Thinkers from America That Inspire You 
  • Who was your first family member to arrive to the United States? Create a family tree that traces back to that ancestor or tell the story of the first person in your family to immigrate to the United States. 
  • Photojournalism: Celebrating Pennsylvania's Natural Beauty and Landmarks 

 

Adult (Equivalent to high school graduate and older) 

  • Photojournalism: Celebrating Pennsylvania's Natural Beauty and Landmarks 
  • Moments in American History That Still Shape My Community and Myself
